Review or Window Dressing?

St Leonards on Sea, January 19, 2010

.Chairman of local residents’ group S.T.A.G. (Save the Archery Ground) Martin Bloomfield said Hastings Borough Council is accepting piecemeal changes to the Archery Ground plan.
“It raises questions as to whether this is a serious reappraisal of the scheme or PR window dressing,” Mr Bloomfield told a meeting on Saturday.
Following a Hastings Borough Council planning meeting with developer Gladedale, STAG expressed alarm at the “piecemeal” changes that the Borough is allowing, in a letter to the chief planning officer of 17th December.
“It is not good enough,” Mr Bloomfield said. “The alterations suggested by the Council planners significantly affect the entire visual and physical impact of the site.
“These changed are so fundamental their impact should be assessed holistically, not piece by piece.
“We are still waiting for a response to the letter,” he said.
STAG members, who have sent more than 400 letters of protest against plans for high-density housing on the historic Archery Ground site, fear their objections are being ignored.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Bloomfield said he had not received a reply from the letter setting out objections. “We are determined not to be overlooked.
“The site is being over-developed with a complete lack of imagination and destroying an area of outstanding natural beauty and architectural importance.
STAG’s campaign, based on the unique architectural and historic importance of the Burtons’ Regency New Town, has received cross-party backing from politicians as well as phenomenal support from local citizens.
It says the proposed development’s density is too high, with too little green space, and will cause chaos to the local infrastructure.
“Gladedale’s plans would cause untold stress to residents who face towering concrete blocks and heaving traffic on their doorsteps every day for the rest of their lives,” the chairman said.
